The sewn cast off is a great alternative to the traditional method as it gives a bit of stretch to the hem of your projects.

Step-by-step guide

Step 1:

When you’re ready to cast off, measure a length of yarn about three times the length of the edge that you’ll be casting off. Thread your sewing needle with the yarn. 

Step 2:

Insert the sewing needle purlwise into the first two stitches.

Step 3:

Pull the yarn through both stitches, leaving them on your knitting needle.

Step 4:

Then insert your sewing needle knitwise through the first stitch.

Step 5:

Pull the yarn through your first stitch, and drop only this stitch off of your knitting needle.

Step 6:

Insert your sewing needle purlwise into the next two stitches.

Step 7:

Pull the yarn through both stitches, leaving them on your knitting needle.

Step 8:

Then insert your sewing needle knitwise through the first stitch.

Step 9:

Pull the yarn through the first stitch, and drop only this stitch off of your knitting needle.

Step 10:

Repeat these steps until only one stitch remains on your knitting needle.

Step 11:

Insert your sewing needle purlwise into the last stitch, pull the yarn through, and drop the stitch off of your knitting needle.

 

You have now completed your sewn cast off!
